Art
The Art Department can implement a broad range of sustainable practices at every stage of the production process. From using eco-friendly materials to re-using props and sets across multiple productions. It revolves around making responsible choices while still delivering high-quality, visually engaging designs.

FUEL

-
Use electric or hybrid vehicles where possible for set construction and delivery.
-
Find EV charging station maps, networks and apps you can use in Australia
-
Source materials locally to reduce transportation emissions.
-
Encourage the crew to carpool when possible.
-
Choose suppliers and craftspeople within the region to support the local economy and minimise freight miles.
-
When delivering or collecting set materials, carpool or consolidate transport trips to lower fuel use.
-
For off-site builds or pickups, use video calls to approve designs and avoid unnecessary travel.

ENERGY
-
Lighting is essential to set dressing and design, but traditional lighting often consumes much energy. The art department can help reduce production energy consumption by using energy-efficient LED lights. LED lights also generate less heat, reducing the need for air conditioning and making the set more comfortable for the crew.
-
Collaborate with the Gaffer and Lighting department to implement smart lighting systems that adjust according to the set’s needs, ensuring energy is not wasted. For example, dimmable lights or automating the lighting to turn off during breaks reduces energy usage.
-
Through careful planning and design, natural rather than artificial lighting is used. This can significantly reduce energy consumption for both outdoor and daylight scenes.
-
On location, use solar and battery storage systems to minimise reliance on generators.

Waste reductions & Recycling

-
Traditional set construction often uses plywood, MDF, and other non renewable resources. Instead, use recycled materials, such as reclaimed wood, metal, and even upcycled plastics.
-
Investigate the use of modular set designs. Set components can be reused or repurposed across different scenes or productions, which saves money and helps decrease waste.
-
Re using sets or set pieces from previous productions, or within the same project, will significantly reduce waste and conserve resources.
-
Use eco-certified cleaning products
-
Choose low-VOC or non-toxic paints and finishes. These are more eco-friendly and safer for the crew working in and around the area.
-
Choose natural fibres like jute, cotton, and hemp rather than synthetic materials like polyester.
-
Minimise plastic set decorations and props and consider sustainable alternatives such as glass, metal, or wood.
-
Eliminate plastic plants. Dress a set with natural indoor plants which will also improve air quality and can be reused.
-
Support the community by purchasing and showcasing local artwork.
-
The department can also look into alternative fabrication methods for creating props, such as 3D printing with biodegradable filaments or using eco-friendly moulding and casting materials, instead of traditional toxic materials.
-
On wrap, donate unused props, set materials, or furniture to upcoming productions, donate to props rentals houses, Costume rental houses, charitable organisations, schools, or non-profit theatres.
