Production

When the production office operates sustainably, it sets a standard for the entire production.  The production office is an often overlooked aspect of eco-friendly filmmaking. It is where planning, coordination, and paperwork take place. By incorporating green practices in this area, productions can significantly reduce their environmental impact. Sustainable practices in the production office can lower energy consumption, minimise paper usage, enhance waste reduction, improve transportation, and much more.

SUSTAINABILITY OFFICER

  • Hiring a Sustainability Officer at the outset of pre-production is crucial to set the eco framework for each department.

  • This person will be the main contact for all sustainability initiatives and enquiries during production.

FUEL

  • Hire EV/Hybrid rental cars for production vehicles and supply EV chargers.

  • Crew local to save flights, accommodation and car rentals

  • Choose Economy for flights rather than Business or First Class.Have a mandatory No Vehicle Idling policy

  • Set up a WhatsApp carpooling group page.  Encourage shared transportation.

  • When booking an Uber or Taxi, choose Uber Green or request an EV/Hybrid taxi.

  • Instead of travelling for meetings, use digital video conferencing tools like Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams.

  • Reward crew who improve the eco footprint of the production by carpooling, using public transport or coordinating shared rides.

ENERGY

  • Choose an energy supplier that provides 100% renewable energy.

  • Coordinate hybrid, battery or biofuel generators where possible.

  • Ensure everything is turned off when not in use.

  • Keep the office temperature between 22°C - 24°C (71.6°F - 75.2°F) in the summer and 21°C - 23°C (69.8°F - 73.4°F) in the winter.

  • Use energy-efficient computers, monitors, and post production editing systems.

  • Install LED light bulbs that use less energy than traditional incandescent or fluorescent bulbs.

  • Use re chargeable batteries in preference to single use batteries.

  • Encourage the use of iCloud storage and digital tools for all wrap files, to prevent unnecessary hard drives, printing and filing materials, especially for post production.

  • Electronic signatures will lessen the need for physical paperwork, including contracts and other legal documents.

  • Make use of digital calendars like Google Calendar for scheduling and task management.

  • If coloured paper is required, use at least 30% recycled paper.

  • Where possible, to minimise paper and printer ink usage and waste, have  the printer set to double-sided printing and print in black-and-white.

Waste Reduction and Recycling

  • Encourage cast and crew to bring their re-usable water bottles and keep cups to elimate single use cups.

  • Source second-hand equipment and office supplies from past productions or charity shops.

  • Place recycle bins in high-foot-traffic areas with clear labels for paper, plastic, and other recyclables. Implement an e-waste recycling initiative to ensure proper disposal of batteries and other electronic devices.

  • Have a zero-waste policy to reduce single-use plastics and other disposable items.

  • Purchase eco-friendly office supplies, such as 100% Australian recycled paper, refillable pens, eco-cleaning products, and non-toxic markers.

  • Utilise sustainable, recyclable packaging for sending freight.

  • When purchasing new appliances, verify the energy efficiency rating.

  • Buy snacks in bulk. Instead of providing individually wrapped snacks, promote the use of reusable containers, cups, and cutlery for snacks and drinks in the office.

  • If there is any old but functioning office furniture, computers, and other equipment that are no longer needed, donate to a charity shop, school or theatre near you. Avoid sending anything to landfill.

  • At wrap, along with the Sustainable Officer, coordinate a Cast and Crew Sale for props, costume and any equipment that is excess to the wrap requirements, at the end of the production.

  • Add indoor plants to your offices, they enhance indoor air quality.
