Make up

Sustainable makeup in film and TV is an emerging trend.  We need to minimise the environmental and ethical impact of makeup products and techniques used in film and television.  There is a growing push to reduce waste, use eco-friendly products, and make more responsible choices regarding makeup.

FUEL

  • Source makeup and skincare products locally to avoid long-distance shipping.

  • Purchase in bulk from Australian-owned or nearby eco suppliers to minimise deliveries and packaging.

  • Use local artists and assistants when shooting in different regions to avoid travel.

  • Carpool to set or coordinate with Hair and Costume departments for shared transport.

  • Use hybrid or electric vehicles when available for departmental transport.

  • Consolidate orders to reduce packaging and multiple courier trips.

  • Hold virtual supplier meetings or training instead of travelling to product demos.

ENERGY

  • Use LED lighting at makeup stations and trailers instead of incandescent or fluorescent bulbs.

  • Switch off mirrors, lights, and devices when not in use or between setups.

  • Use solar power or battery systems to run makeup trucks.

  • Unplug heat tools (curlers, hairdryers, sterilisers) after use to prevent standby power drain.

  • Choose energy-efficient appliances such as low-wattage hairdryers.

  • Air dry brushes and sponges where possible instead of using dryers.

  • If working on location, power makeup stations with solar or battery units instead of generators.

  • Share power sources with nearby departments to reduce redundant equipment use.

Waste Reduction & Recycling

  • Choose Australian owned eco-certified, cruelty-free, and refillable makeup brands

  • Refill palettes, foundations, and powders instead of repurchasing new packaging.

  • Buy palette pans, containers, and jars made from recycled or biodegradable materials.

  • Use biodegradable wipes or switch to washable cloths for makeup removal.

  • Replace single-use cotton pads and swabs with reusable or compostable alternatives.

  • Use eco-friendly, non-toxic brush cleaners and disinfectants.

  • Wash brushes and sponges in cold water using biodegradable soap.

  • Use eco-certified cleaning products.

  • Replace plastic brush guards and disposables with silicone or reusable mesh protectors.

  • Use refillable spray bottles for sanitising instead of single-use aerosols.

  • Minimise printing (face charts, product lists) by using tablets or digital documents.

  • Use low-VOC paints and adhesives for prosthetics and body art applications.

  • Collect empty containers for recycling through TerraCycle or brand take-back programs.

  • Use non-toxic and organic products that avoid harmful chemicals and synthetic fragrances.
