Lighting

The Sustainable Lighting Department focuses on using energy-efficient lighting technology, reducing waste, and optimising power consumption without sacrificing creative goals.  The Lighting Department can play a significant role in reducing a film or TV production's environmental impact.

FUEL

  • Hire hybrid or electric lighting vehicles and trucks when available.

  • Plan efficient load-in and load-out schedules to reduce unnecessary travel and idling.

  • Carpool or share transport between the lighting and grip teams to reduce fleet size.

  • Avoid idling of trucks, generators, and lifts — switch off whenever equipment is stationary.

  • Use solar or hybrid power units on remote or small sets to reduce generator fuel burn.

  • Coordinate power needs with other departments to avoid over-supplying or running multiple small generators.

  • Choose local suppliers for lighting rentals to reduce freight distances.

ENERGY

  • Prioritise LED lighting fixtures over traditional tungsten, HMI, or fluorescent lights — LEDs use up to 80% less energy.

  • Use dimmers and smart controls to manage energy output and avoid over-lighting.

  • Shut down lighting setups when not filming (breaks, resets, turnovers).

  • Where possible, power lighting grids from solar or battery storage systems.

  • Monitor total power draw with meters to track usage and optimise generator sizing.

  • Charge batteries and lights during daylight hours when solar power is available.

  • Use motion sensors or timed lighting in workshops and prep areas to save electricity.

  • Cool efficiently — LED lights generate less heat, reducing air-conditioning needs on set.

Waste Reduction & Recycling

  • Reuse gels, diffusers, and frames — label, store, and recycle where possible.

  • Switch to biodegradable gel alternatives or use digital colour correction in-camera or post.

  • Recycle old lighting fixtures, cables, and stands through e-waste programs when they reach end-of-life.

  • Maintain and repair rather than replace lighting gear — extend the lifespan of cables, lamps, and fittings.

  • Refurbish used light stands, clamps, and grip accessories before disposal.

  • Use rechargeable batteries for wireless fixtures and portable lights instead of disposables.

  • Store all gear properly to avoid damage and unnecessary replacements.

  • Order consumables in bulk to reduce packaging waste and delivery frequency.

  • Recycle cardboard boxes and plastic wraps from lighting deliveries.

  • Reuse cable ties, sandbags, and rigging materials whenever possible.

  • Choose eco-friendly cleaning products and degreasing products for lighting equipment.

  • Collect and recycle spent bulbs, tubes, and e-waste safely.

  • Encourage crew to use refillable drink bottles and reusable coffee cups.
