Hair

The  Hair Department in film and television should be encouraged to minimise their environmental impact. The department can help reduce waste, support local eco-friendly products, use less water and energy, recycle and re-use materials, minimise waste, and prioritise environmentally friendly practices as much as possible.

FUEL

  • Source hair products locally to reduce freight and packaging miles.

  • Buy in bulk from nearby or Australian-owned suppliers to cut down on deliveries and imported goods.

  • Use local hairstylists and assistants when filming in regional or interstate locations to avoid extra travel.

  • Carpool to set or coordinate transport with the Makeup and Costume departments.

  • Use electric or hybrid vehicles where possible for personal or department travel.

  • Conduct virtual product trials or supplier meetings instead of in-person visits to save time and fuel.

  • Consolidate orders (e.g. hairpieces, wigs, styling tools) to minimise shipping emissions and packaging waste.

ENERGY

  • Use energy-efficient tools — e.g. eco or low-wattage hair dryers, curling irons, and straighteners.

  • Unplug appliances when not in use or during breaks to prevent standby energy draw.

  • If power is needed on location, use solar or battery-powered outlets instead of generators.

  • Use LED lighting in hair trailers or stations for energy efficiency.

  • For wash stations or wig maintenance, use cold or lukewarm water to save energy.  Air dry wigs and hairpieces whenever possible instead of using dryers.

  • Reduce the frequency of hair washing or use dry shampoo as an alternative.

Eco friendly materials

  • Choose Australian-owned shampoos, conditioners, styling gels, and hair sprays that are sustainable, cruelty-free, vegan, and organic. Purchase in bulk or utilise refill stations to reduce packaging waste.

  • Select hair care items packaged in recyclable or biodegradable materials.

  • The Hair Department can use natural, non-toxic hair dyes with lower environmental impact for colouring or bleaching. Source plant-based hair dyes that are free of harmful chemicals and have less ecological toxicity.

  • Use biodegradable wipes, towels, and cleaning cloths instead of single-use paper.

Waste Reduction & Recycling

  • Haircuts on set can produce a lot of waste. Hair trimmings can be collected and donated to organisations that accept hair for making wigs, or they can be used for oil spill cleanup as they naturally absorb oil.

  • Hair is biodegradable, so unused hair can be composted rather than thrown away. Composting hair reduces landfill waste and provides organic material for gardening and farming.

  • Reuse wigs and hairpieces from past productions after proper cleaning and restyling.

  • Donate unwanted wigs or extensions to local theatre schools, training programs, or charities.

  • Switch to reusable mixing bowls, brushes, clips, and combs instead of disposable plastic tools.

  • Collect empty product bottles and tubes for recycling through TerraCycle or salon-specific recycling programs.

Aknowledgement to Country

We want to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land where we work and live. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We celebrate the stories, culture and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders of all communities who also work and live on this land.

As sustainability becomes a larger priority for consumers and industry leaders alike, adopting greener practices can benefit the planet and position filmmakers as responsible and forward-thinking creators.
